While recovering from a devastating battle a Ship Commander is faced with difficult decisions about discovering valuable intelligence about their opponent and saving her own crew.
Simultaneously, their opponents pilot is trying to recover control of their ship - a devastatingly powerful unknown quantity.

The story alternates between the Commander's experiences and the pilots during the direct aftermath of the battle.
When does humankind step beyond the boundaries and create that which should not be?

I can see great potential for this series.

Independence Two Democracies Revolution Book 0 eBook Alasdair Shaw Reviews

Bought it because I'd heard there was a twist. Wasn't disappointed. Very cool story, and the author did a great job describing the chaos and destruction in the aftermath of a horrific starship battle. Good job, brother! Keep up the great work.
In only around 6,000 words this Alasdair Shaw has managed to tell the beginning of a much longer story with a flair. Introducing two characters that can carry a future series on their shoulders, and one of them is apparently not human. A great story that will leave you wanting book 1 eagerly.
Enjoyable, short read. Interesting conflict between the survivors of a starship and the AI of an opposing ship. As a prelude to a series, it was entertaining enough to make me want to read the first book in the regular series when I have the time.
Independence is an interesting, well-written short story. Great start, straight into the action. The two viewpoints work really well to build suspense and there’s just enough ‘science’ to make it believable without overloading the reader with excessive info dumping.

The revelation at the end is a great twist but I think it would have been even more effective if the focus didn’t switch from one viewpoint to the other about two thirds through the story.

Independence works well as a prequel to the Two Democracies series, introducing the main character and providing a glimpse into the conflict between the Republic and the Congress.
I rarely post a review for a book I feel is worth less than a four star rating. I'm making this exception because I suspect I may come back later to revise it. This is NOT a stand-alone book, in fact, part of it's title (Book 0) suggests it comes before other books in a series. I can't rightly call it a story because, to me, a story has a beginning, a middle and an ending. We are made aware there has been a devastating Space Battle between two major war-ships that have both suffered greatly. On one of them we learn that most of the few survivors depart for a near-by planet via escape pods. The vessel commander is in a small transport with a crew of Combat Warriors who plan to invade the other ship. Some intelligence on this other ship (we are given strong clues it is an AI that has all but total command), is gradually becoming aware of the invading force and takes action to repel or destroy them. It is slowly being successful at this when the story(?) ends.
We're left with too many questions, the biggest one is WHY? What's the point? I can only suspect there's more to come; perhaps a Book 1 or even 2. I do have to say this was well written and interesting enough for me to continue reading. I normally quit reading before I get very far into any book I don't think will be worth my limited reading time or a Four Star Rating.
To the author I say I'M WAITING !

Review by THE HOLEY ONE
Good, although very short introduction to Shaw's Two Democracies series. The plot picks up in the aftermath of a battle in space with two highly-compromised ships and their crews seeking to finish the other off.
The writing is solid, although a little confusing in places, but relatively few typos drive the narrative to completion. There is a lack of depth, to be expected from such a short 'book,' but I'd be interesting in learning more about the crew members in future installments within the series.
Independence is a well-written introductory vignette of the aftermath of a devastating space battle. Shaw's world is engaging and clearly has depth, even from this brief encounter.
The two ships have all but destroyed each other, and the surviving crew struggle to make repairs and, even more, to make sense of the limited information their damaged ships allow them.
The fog of war (yes, even in space) slowly thins and the crews begin to orient themselves and to respond to new challenges.
This process is a very nice parallel with the reader's experience, as the situation becomes steadily clearer. Decision-making is critical, time is ticking, and the consequences are measured by body count.
What am I going to do?
I'm going to get more Alasdair Shaw and read, read, read!
